Christianshavn private tour review

Private tour review

My verdict: promising rather than proven. A private two-hour walk in English, Spanish, Italian or French, from Højbro Plads through Christianshavn and into Freetown Christiania, rated 5.0 from seven reviews. Seven is seven. A perfect score from a young listing is a good sign, not a track record, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend the number means what 300 reviews would mean.

What the tour is

Two hours, your group only, starting at Højbro Plads and taking in Christianshavns Kanal, Nyboder, Freetown Christiania and the Church of Our Saviour. Public transport is included where the route uses it, which is a useful tell: these stops are not all within a short walk of each other, so expect to keep moving and expect some of the two hours to be spent getting between places.

What you are buying is a guide whose attention is undivided. On a group walk the awkward questions go unasked, and in Christiania the awkward questions are the useful ones: what happened here in 2016, why the residents dug up Pusher Street themselves in April 2024, who decides anything in a place governed by plenum. A private guide will take those. The history itself sits on the Pusher Street page.

Who it suits

Anyone who needs Spanish, Italian or French, which no other tour on this site offers alongside English. Families with young children, who set the pace rather than following one. Visitors with limited mobility, since the listing says wheelchair accessible. And anyone who wants to ask questions they would not put to a stranger in a group of ten. The private tours page goes through when that is worth it.

Who should skip it

If you want the reassurance of a long review record, book the walking tour instead and accept the group. If you want serious time inside the Freetown, five stops in two hours does not leave much of it, and how long to spend explains what an hour inside actually buys. If you want two districts and a longer walk, the Vesterbro and Christianshavn tour is the bigger version of this idea.

What works

  • Four languages, including three no other tour here offers
  • Private, so the pace and the questions are yours
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Reserve now, pay later, with free cancellation up to 24 hours

Worth knowing

  • Seven reviews. A clean score, a very small sample
  • Five stops in two hours, with transport between some of them
  • Christiania is one stop, not the destination
  • Food, drink and tips are on you

What reviewers actually say

There are two worth quoting, which tells you the position. Denise from the United Kingdom wrote: “It was amazing and Henri was great. Loved Freetown.” Florence from Belgium called it a “very nice guide to discover the city”. Henri and Simona are the guides named in the reviews.

I am not going to build an argument on two sentences. What they establish is that the tour runs, that the guides turn up, and that the people who took it were pleased. What they cannot establish is consistency across a season. That comes with the hundredth review, not the seventh.

Insider tip

Tell the guide at Højbro Plads that Christiania is the part you care about. On a private tour the itinerary bends, and the difference between fifteen minutes and forty inside the gate is usually one sentence at the start.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5.0 rating from seven reviews trustworthy?

It is a promising sign and not a proven track record. Seven people had a good tour, which is worth knowing, but it cannot tell you how the tour holds up across a full season the way the walking tour’s 300 reviews can.

What languages is the private tour available in?

English, Spanish, Italian and French. That is the widest language range on this site, and it is the main reason to choose it over the English-only group walks.

Is the private tour good for families?

It suits families better than a group walk does, because you set the pace and stop when a child needs to. Whether the Freetown itself works for your children is covered on visiting with kids, and the short answer since April 2024 is that it is far less of a question than it was.
