What you actually need
Nothing at the gate. What you need is the rules posted on it, which take thirty seconds to read and cover most of what visitors get wrong: no hard drugs, no violence, no weapons, bikes walked rather than ridden, ask before photographing people, and do not run. So what is the tour for
Context and company. A guided walk is booked in advance, meets outside the Freetown and takes you in with somebody who knows which path is private and what the buildings were before they were houses. Is Christiania free to enter?
Yes. There is no ticket and no entrance fee; you walk in through the gate on Prinsessegade. The cafés, galleries and workshops inside are ordinary businesses with their own opening hours, roughly from 10–11am.
Do I need to book anything in advance?

Are there opening hours for Christiania?
The streets never close, because it is a residential district. The venues open later in the morning, which is why weekday afternoons work best for a first visit.
